Pavement Signs and A-Board Signs

Pavement signs are a great way to advertise your business outdoors. They’re ideal for use in high-footfall environments, such as high-streets or in exhibition centres. These large sized advertisements will easily draw in the attention of customers and, being two sided, have a great opportunity to attract a customer’s eye from multiple directions.

We have a range of different options on offer, such as our chalkboard pavement signs. These can be changed daily and are perfect for cafes and restaurants due to their wooden, rustic finish. Additionally, our Steelback Pavement Signs are durable, reliable pavements signs that suit any environment. The snap frames make it easy to change the inserts frequently. We even have our  “Eco 35” waterproof pavement signs version for consistent use outdoors.

What is a Pavement Sign?

Pavement signs – sometimes referred to as forecourt signs – are a great way to attract potential customers to your physical business. Both sturdy and stable, these large, eye-catching outdoor advertisements can be easily placed in busy areas, such as high streets and exhibition centres to let people know where you are, who you are and what you have to offer.

At VKF Renzel, we have a range of different pavement signs and A-Board Signs to choose from. We stock Traditional Chalkboard Options that you can personalise by drawing your own messages and designs on, as well as versions where you can place your own printed inserts inside. Indeed, both text and graphic designs can be printed onto posters that can be easily slotted into your pavement sign.

The Benefits of Outdoor Pavement Signs

Although digital platforms like websites and social media are now one of the most effective ways to market your business, physical advertisements still play a key role in getting you noticed and telling potential customers about what you do. The key is to display your message clearly and concisely, in an eye-catching format.

Physical pavement signs are a great way to check all of these boxes. In addition to signposting your business to ensure that potential customers can find you, they capture the attention of passers-by who may not otherwise have noticed you. This is your chance to sell your products and services in the space of a few seconds, in the hope that the information provided – be it a menu, pricing or promotional details – will encourage them to come in and find out more.

Different Types of Outdoor Pavement Signs

Pavement signs are a great way to get your brick-and-mortar premises noticed. However, with so many different styles and options available on the market, it can be difficult to determine the best kind of pavement board for your business. We’ve broken down our range of pavement signs and outlined their benefits to help you make your decision.
  • A-Board Signs - also known as sandwich boards or A-frame pavement signs, A-board signs are double-sided pavement signs, where each side slopes together to form a peak in the middle. They are often held together by a hinge for additional stability. A-board signs come in a variety of materials, including chalkboard and waterproof plastics in a steel frame – perfect for holding pre-designed posters.
  • Chalkboard Signs - whether you choose a classic pavement style or opt for freestanding partition walls, chalkboards are a great option for businesses that like to frequently change their message. For instance, you might like to write about special offers, update your menu or share an inspiring quote of the day. The fact that chalkboard pavement signs can be easily wiped down and changed makes them incredibly versatile.
  • Wind Signs - wind signs are a type of pavement sign that is a great option for use in most weather types. Their fillable bases ensure that the stand remains in place during high winds, and the clear cover and hardware keeps your inserts protected from the rain.
  • Digital Pavement Signs - there’s no reason why your pavement signs have to be traditional. It’s also a great idea to invest in digital pavement signs, specifically designed for outdoor use. Not only do they do a great job at capturing people’s interest – allowing you to include more complex graphics, videos and music – but they also allow you to regularly update your message without worrying about reprinting.

Factors to Consider When Choosing Your Pavement Signs

Wondering what kind of pavement sign is right for your business? There are several key factors to consider when making your decision, as detailed below.

  • Location
Before buying pavement signs for your business, you’ll need to consider location. How much space do you have on the street outside? How likely is your sign to get in the way of passers-by?

We would recommend investing in a large, Double-Sided Pavement Sign possible. Placed directly outside your premises, this will maximise your chances of getting noticed, increasing possible custom.

Another factor to consider when thinking about location is the weather. Is your building particularly exposed to the wind and rain? If so, getting a solid, weighted pavement sign that’s completely protected from the elements is a must. Luckily, many forecourt signs provided by VKF Renzel are fully waterproof and weatherproof.

  • Size
Make sure your chosen sign is large enough to stand out in the surrounding environment. If you’re on a quaint street in a small village, a small-to-medium Sandwich Board will work well. Nevertheless, on a busy shopping street in a large town, a large size may be needed to stand out from the crowd.

Larger pavement signs can, however, become an obstruction and it’s important to ensure you’re not limiting accessibility in any way. It’s also important to consider the type of information you want to display, so keep your message short and sweet to quickly attract attention. Make sure your chosen font size and graphics are clear enough to be seen from a distance too.

  • Durability
Many of our poster stand pavement signs can be filled with sand or water to weigh them down. Our wooden-framed pavement boards are sealed to prevent them from rotting and our metal-framed products are specifically designed not to rust. If you opt to insert printed posters into your pavement stands, rest assured that they're supplied with weatherproof pockets.

  • Intended Purpose
To keep people up-to-date with your newest menu offerings or weekly specials, a chalkboard or other easily changeable format is best advised. Nevertheless, if you are happy to stick with the same message for months or longer, print materials might work well. The advantage of this is that you can also include more complex graphics and additional information within the poster display.

For any of our pavement signs requiring an insert, we are also able to supply you with a printed graphic. For more information, a quote, or to send your artwork to us, please contact us at sales@vkf-renzel.co.uk.

Additionally, certain units are able to be printed onto directly, perhaps with your company logo or slogan, further enhancing your corporate branding.
Yes. Most of the pavement signs we supply at VKF Renzel are fully waterproof. Whilst many of our wooden-framed signs have been sealed and treated to protect them from water damage, our poster-style A-boards, sandwich boards and forecourt boards tend to come with a protective plastic pocket designed to protect your print materials from the external elements.

Aluminium panels are also impervious to rain and sun damage and work well for those with a permanent message to share. There’s no need to worry about other types of weather wreaking havoc either, as our selection of sturdy frames and fillable bases ensures that your chosen pavement sign will stay put, whatever the weather.
The insertion of posters varies between our pavement signs. We have many units that utilise the snap frame technology, allowing you to pull the sides of the frame out towards you, place the inserts inside, then close the sides of the frame down, securing the insert and cover sheet into place. Alternatively, our Slot In A Board simply requires you to slide your graphic in to the frame from the top of the unit.

In addition, we also have a number of units that required a "sticky" PVC print to be stuck to the board instead, rather than inserting a phyiscal print. Examples of this include the Curved Top A Board and the Value A Board.
The kind of pavement sign that you get for your business will depend on what you do, what you want to advertise and where you are located.

It’s important to choose a pavement sign style that’s consistent with your brand image. For instance, traditional chalkboard styles with a wooden frame fit well with artisanal companies like bakeries, cafés and craft shops. Likewise, technology companies might prefer a digital pavement sign.

If you want to advertise special offers that change on a regular basis – or simply communicate with your customers in a friendly way to share a bit of your brand personality to entice them – pick a format that you can update frequently, like chalkboards and markerboards. If you want something more permanent, go for poster-holder pavement signs into which you can insert printed materials. Finally, if you’re happy to use the same message in the longer term, opt for something more durable like a printed aluminium panel.

The last thing to take into consideration is size and how well your chosen pavement sign fits the area in which it will be displayed. See our frequently asked question about sizing above for further information.

When it comes to outdoor pavement signs, there’s a wide variety of options available. These include different fold up versions, signs for displaying pre-printed posters and weatherproof models too.

A boards are a commonly used model throughout the country. They’re an effective tool for displaying up to two large printed posters. These fold up pavement signs are generally manufactured from silver anodised aluminium and are perfect for showcasing a selection of your pre-printed posters. The Classic Outdoor A Board is a great cost-effective solution; it is also fairly lightweight so ensures that moving the pavement stand around is easy.

Wind signs are another popular option. If the weather is a concern to you, then these are a great option. Each outdoor wind sign comes with a fillable sand or water base that ensures the stand is securely held down at all times, no matter what the weather. They’re generally double-sided and manufactured from plastic and steel, however chalkboard variations are also available. Similarly to A boards, these sturdy wind signs are typically inserted with a physical poster.

Additionally, chalkboard pavement signs are growing in popularity. These fold up sides are also double-sided and come in various wooden finishes. Rather than inserting a pre-printed poster, these require an individual to write and/or draw content onto the chalkboard itself, with the use of chalk or chalk markers.
It depends. Each council area in the UK has different rules, which are constantly changing, so it’s best to check with your local authority before making your purchase. It is generally acceptable to place a pavement sign in front of your own property, provided that it doesn’t constitute a physical obstruction. Nevertheless, lighting and other factors, such as the likelihood of your sign blowing into the road, can influence the council’s decision. You are also more likely to require permission if you are planning on placing your pavement sign next to a main road.
